Injuries Flashcards
(11 cards)
Traumatic brain injury
-A type of brain injury that occurs when external forces cause damage to the brain
Non traumatic brain injury
- A type of a brain injury that is due to some internal factors such as lack of oxygen, stroke
Aphasia
-Language disorder
-results from acquired brain injury in areas responsible for language production and processing
-Primarily seen in people who have suffered stroke
-can be caused by tumor, infection or dementia
Broca Aphasia
-Non fluent aphasia
-impacts an individuals ability to produce speech
-They have good comprehension but struggle to speak in sentences
-tend to speak in simple verbs and nouns
-Has awareness that they have it
Wernicke’s area
-Fluent aphasia
-Impacts a persons ability to understand written or spoken language
-Can speak fluently, but content is odd
-unaware they have this condition
Stroke
Symptoms : Numbness or weakness on one side of the face or body, trouble walking or balance, headaches, trouble seeing out of one eye
-Location of stroke affect the types of damage
-Damage to the right samotosensory or motor cortex affect the left (vice versa)
Epilepsy
-main symptoms are repeated seizures, loss of consciousness is common, abnormal movements after a seizure e.g shaking and twitching of muscles
-Gut microbiota can have a large impact on the severity of symptoms
-ketogenic diet (no carbohydrates) used to treat for children
-Probiotics can assist in reducing amount of seizures
-Diagnosed with a ct or mri
-
Stroke diagnosis and treatment
-Diagnosed through blood tests and neuroimaging
-No treatment can repair the brain damage
-Rehabilitation involves a person relearning their lost abilities (more effective if started earlier)
Epilepsy diagnose and treatment
-Diagnosed with eeg, ct or mri
-treatments include anti elliptic medication, diet, brain stimulation device and surgery as a last resort
Parkinson disease
-Neurodegenerative disease where there is a progressive loss of neurons in the brain that produce dopamine
Symptoms : Tremors, reduced muscle control, impaired posture / balance, fatigue, deprssion / anxiety
-exact cause is unknown
Reseach shows it may begin in the gut
Parkinson’s disease (diagnosis and treatment)
-diagnosed using Mri and Pet
-no cure
-treatments help reduce severity of symptoms include medication that increases amount of dopamine in the brain, brain stimulation where electrodes are surgically inserted into the brain
-research suggest that a faecal transplant from a healthy donor could decrease inflammation in the brain
