Medulla
-Controls vital body functions such as breathing, heart rate, blood pressure, vomiting, salivating and coughing
Pons
-Controls sleep, arousal from sleep, breath control, coordination
Cerebellum
-About the size of a tennis ball
-80% of brains neurons
-Regulates fine muscle movements
-regulates posture and balance
Hypothalamus
-Maintains body’s internal environment by regulating the releasing of hormones (homeostasis)
-Controls hunger, body temp and sleep
-Part of the limbic system
Thalamus
-Acts as a relay system by filtering information from all senses except smell
-Passes information to relevant brain areas for processing
-Plays a role in attention by highlighting what is important
Cerebrum
-Consists of an outer surface called cerebrum cortex and masses of neural tissue
-Responsible for everything we consciously think feel or do
-Divided into 2 hemispheres and is connected by the corpus callosum
