Inorganic Compounds & Solutions Flashcards
(12 cards)
Inorganic compounds
Compounds that lack carbon and are structurally simple. Their molecules have only a few atoms and cannot be used by cells to perform complicated biological functions
Water
The most important and abundant inorganic compound in all living systems. It’s polarity makes it an excellent solvent for other ionic and polar substances, gives water molecules cohesion, and allows water to resist temperature changes
Solution
A substance called the solvent dissolves another substance called the solute
Hydrophilic
Solutes that are charged or contain polar covalent bonds, which means they dissolve easily in water
Hydrophobic
Molecules that contain mainly nonpolar covalent bonds. They are not very water soluble
Hydrolysis
Decomposition reactions that break down large nutrient molecules into smaller molecules by the addition of water molecules
Dehydrated synthesis reaction
When two smaller molecules join to form a larger molecule. A water molecule is one of the molecules formed
Mixture
A combination of elements or compounds that are physically blended together but not bound by chemical bonds
Colloid
A solution with solute particles that are large enough to scatter light
Suspension
The suspended material may mix with the liquid or suspending material for some time, but eventually it will settle out
Dissociate
When inorganic acids, bases, or salts dissolve in water, they separate into ions and become surrounded by water molecules
Acid
A substance that dissociates into one or more hydrogen ions and one or more anions
