What is opisthognathous?

The head is vertical, mouthparts are posterior (face to the back of the insect)

4

Name the segments of the leg in order starting from the body

Coax, trocanter, femur, tibia, tarsus, claw

5

What is the function of sensillae?

They measure pressure, stress, smell and are used to taste substrates

6

Why are legs covered in sensilla?

To plan the next motor activity

7

What order does wing venation go in?

Costa, sub-costa, radius, media, cubitus and anal

8

What are the pigmented spots on the wings called?

Pterostigma

9

What are halteres?

Sensory organs on the wings for movement

Give the name of the top, middle and bottom of the abdomen

Tergite, pleurite and sternite

12

Give the positions of the aorta, gut and nerve cord

Aorta is dorsal, gut is central and nerve cord is ventral

13

What is the Antennapedia gene?

It is a hox gene that specifies transcription factors for the anterior/posterior pattern

14

Where are the highest levels of the Antennapedia gene?

In the central portion of the 2nd thoracic segment where an adult leg is produced

15

What are the four segments of the brain?

Archicerebrum
Prosocerebrum/Protocerebrum
Deutocerebrum
Tritocerebrum

16

What are the direct flight muscles attached to?

Sclerites: hardened bits of cuticle at the base of the wing
