Q

What is the difference between a “contact approach” and a “visual
approach”?

A

Contact Approach - An a/c on IFR flight plan, with ATC authorization, operation clear of clouds with at least 1 SM visibility and a reasonable expectation of continuing to the destination airport in those conditions. May deviate from instrument approach procedure and proceed to airport with visual reference to the surface. Must be requested.

Visual Approach - An approach conducted on a instrument flight plan which authorizes the pilot to proceed visually and clear of clouds to the airport. Must have the airport or preceding a/c in sight. Must be authorized and under the control of the appropriate ATC control facility.

Q

In the event you are experiencing lost commo, when can you leave a clearance limit that is an IAF?

A

Whenever as close to the expected further clearance time if one was received, or if not received at the expected time of arrival.

Q

What is the difference between being cleared to “air taxi”, “hover taxi”, or “taxi”?

A

Air - Aircraft movement above the surface but less than 100 ft, the aircraft can proceed via taxiway in speeds over 20 kts.
Hover - movement above the surface IGE at speeds below 20 kts.
Taxi - the movement of an aircraft under its own power on the surface of the airport.

Q

While flying on an IFR flight plan, what is the difference between cleared for a “straight in approach” and a “straight in landing”?

A

Straight in Approach - Instrument approach where you can begin the final approach without a procedure turn.

Straight in landing - A landing made on the runway aligned within 30 degrees of the final approach course following the completion of an instrument approach.

Q

What are the standards for Task 1182: Perform Unusual Attitude Recovery?

A
  1. Identify unusual attitude.
  2. Analyze aircraft attitude. Without delay, use correct recovery procedures with minimal loss of altitude.
  3. Without delay, perform recovery procedure in the following sequence.
    a) Attitude - level the wings and pitch attitude while maintaining the aircraft in trim.
    b) Heading - establish and maintain appropriate heading.
    c) TQ - adjust to cruise or climb power
    d) Airspeed - maintain the desired airspeed
    e) Altitude - return to the appropriate/desired altitude after establishing aircraft control.
  4. Clear the Aircraft
  5. Recover without exceeding aircraft operating limitations.
