Integumentary System Flashcards
(26 cards)
What is the integumentary system?
It covers body and maintains homeostasis. It includes skin, hair, and nails
What tissue is the system?
Epithelial
What are the functions of skin?
Protects, sense, regulates body temp, gets rid of body waste
What determines skin color?
Melanin
What is melanin?
It’s a pigment that colors the skin. Less melanin-less color
Absorbs UV light from the sun- reduces damage to to the skin
What are the layers of the skin?
1.Epidermis
2. Dermis
3.Subcutaneous layer-fat layer
What is the epidermis layer?
Outermost layer, mostly dead cells filled with proteins called keratins
What is keratin?
It’s a protein that produces keratinocytes and make the skin tough
What is the dermis?
Below the epidermis, filled with fibers called collagen, it provides strength, it’s where most structures are located
What is collagen?
A protein usually found in connective tissue
What is the subcutaneous layer?
The 3rd layer, fat layer
What are nails?
Forms in the nail root, strength from keratin,
What is the function of nails?
Protects tip of fingernails and toenails, allows the sense of touch
What are injuries of the skin?
Cancer, acne, cuts
What is skin cancer?
Damage to to genetic material, often UV light
What are the steps of skin healing ?
Steps of Skin Healing
• Initial cut
• Blood clots to stop bleeding and keep bacteria out
• Bacteria fighting cells come to area
• Damaged cells are replaced by cell division
What are structures in the integumentary system?
Blood vessels, never receptors, hair follicles, muscle fibers, oil glands, sweat glands
What is the function of blood vessels?
Transport substances: oxygen, nutrients, wastes.
Helps regulate body temperature
What are nerve receptors?
Carry messages to and from the brain
What do hair follicles do?
They makes hair
What is hair?
• Forms in hair follicle
• Grows as new cells are added
• Older cells pushed upward
• Only living cells are in follicle, the rest are dead
• Color from melanin
• Filled with keratin
What is the function of hair?
Protect skin from UV, keeps particles from hair and nose, helps regulate body temperature
What is muscle fibers?
Attached to hair follicle, can contract and cause hair to stand up- gooseups
What are oil/sebectaus glands?
Release oil/sebum, keeps hair flexible, waterproofs the epidermis
