22

A

Muscles pull on bones to allow for movement.

23
Q

What are the types of bone?

A
  1. Long: Big movements (Ex: femur, humerus)
  2. Short: Provide support (Ex: Carpals)
  3. Flat: Protection (Ex: ribs, sternum)
  4. Irregular: Various purposes (Ex: Vertebrae)
  5. Sesamoid: Surrounded by tendons
24
Q

What are the main components of a bone?

A

Made of connective tissue and minerals (mainly Ca and P)

25
What is compact bone?
Outer shell of bones is compact and hard. Contains tiny canals (openings) to allow blood vessels through.
26
What is spongy bone?
Porous (lots of gaps/holes). Mostly at end of long bones. Distributes force and acts as a shock absorber.
27
What is red marrow?
Produces blood cells. Found in center of long bones.
28
What is yellow marrow?
Stores fat cells. Found in center of long bones of adults.
29
What is cartilage?
Soft and flexible tissue at end of long bones.
30
What are bone joints?
Where two or more bones meet. Moveable joints contain oil-like fluid to lubricate joints.
31
What is a ball and socket joint?
Allows free movement in all directions. ## Footnote Example: Shoulder
32
What are hinge joints?
Allows flexing and extension of limbs. ## Footnote Example: Elbow
33
What are gliding joints?
Allows bones to glide/slide over one another. ## Footnote Example: Carpals in wrist
34
What are ligaments?
Connective tissue that attaches bone to bone at joints. ## Footnote Example: Ligaments of the knee
35
What is the long bone?
Long big movements Ex;femur and humerus
36
What is the short bone?
Provides support Ex: carpals
37
What is the flat bone?
Protection Ex: ribs, sternum
38
What is the irregular bone?
Various purposes, ex vertebrae
39
What is the sesamoid bone?
Surrrounded by tendons Ex: carpals
40
What are osteoblasts?
Cells that build bones.
41
What are osteoclasts?
Cells that break down bone.
42
What is osteoarthritis?
Cartilage between joints is worn away, causing bones to rub against each other and become damaged. ## Footnote Caused by age.
43
What is rheumatoid arthritis?
An autoimmune disease where the immune system attacks healthy cells by mistake, leading to swelling and inflammation in the joints. ## Footnote Can occur at any age.
44
What is osteoporosis?
A condition where bone density decreases, making bones break more easily. ## Footnote Caused by age or poor diet.
45
Protection, and support
