what are the advantages of sets and streams?
- each student sits an exam most suited to their ability
- each student is able to learn at a suitable pace
what are the disadvantages of sets and streams?
- disadvantages late bloomers
- setting discriminates and affects attainment
- working class ethnic minorities populate lower sets
what are the advantages of mixed ability?
- everyone learns the same content
- benefits students socially as there is a healthier mix of students; so less anti school subcultures
what are the disadvantages of mixed ability?
- may lead to a lack of confidence for lower ability pupils
- teachers will have to plan many activities as different abilities require different tasks
what are the advantages of banding?
- socially mixes all groups
- suitable pacing for all students
what are the disadvantages of banding?
- weaker students may fall behind
- can still lead to labelling within the classroom
what is differentiation?
when teachers “set/stream” pupils according to how they see their ability/behaviour
what is polarisation?
occurs as a result of sets/streams, which is when pupils respond by moving towards opposite poles (pro school subculture or anti school subculture)
