Interpretivism Flashcards
(21 cards)
interpretivism
methodological approach based upon understanding interpretations and meanings people give to specific actions
verstehen
empathy for subjects
individuals with free will
society is constructed by decisions of individuals
micro sociolgy
the meanings individuals prescribe to events rather than societies’ metanarrative
favour qualitative data
subjective as individuals have their own opinions
society cannot be studies scientifically
individuals are unique in their interpretations
participant and non-participant observations
first-hand account of human behaviours which heightens understanding of groups experience
secondary sources
personal/historical documents provide insight into lives of others
open questionnaires and unstructured interviews
surveys gather written and verbal accounts of meanings and motivations of specific events
strength: validity
uncover meanings and motivations as they probe deeper than the surface of social facts
strength: qualitative
uncover hidden meanings where researchers are often MC and can understand views outside of their social class
strength: champion underdog
provide a voice to those that often go neglected and unheard in other research and the media
strength: hard-to-reach groups
gain insight into hard-to-reach groups e.g. deviant subcultures and oppressed women
limitation - unreliable
difficult to replicate
limitation - lacks ojectivity
researcher has too much influence in research, interpreting actions that fit into their theoretical position, aims or hypothesis
limitation - unable to generalise
due to in-depth focus on atypical and small-scale nature of methods, unable to generalise wider population
limitation - unscientific
difficult to falsify so often rejected for decision and policy making
interpretivist view of sociology being a science
sociologists should be independent of government and the role is to act as a commentary on society
WILLIS - learning to labour
interpretivist methodology to investigate educational experiences of WC school boys (‘laddish subcultures’)
YOUNG
research into deviance amplification due to labelling and cracking down on marijuana users in Notting Hill leading to further deviance
FULLER, MAC and GHAIL, ARCHER
interpretivist methods in education to examine impacts of education on different social groups
