Intro Flashcards
(12 cards)
What is an EIA
An EIA is a systematic process created to identify , predict and manage the effects of a proposed activity or project on the environment and people.
What are the processes involved in an EIA
Project proposals
Screening
ALternatives
Scoping
Baseline study
Identifying and describing effects (impact assessment )
Risk analysis
Risk-benefit evaluation
Public review,participation and communication
EIS
Review
Decision
What is there to remember about and EIA procedure ?
Remember that it is an iterative process . This means that it’s is not completed in a single steps but involves repeated cycleS ,steps of review, analysis and improvement
What is an EIS(Environmental Impact Statement)
It is a formal legal document which contains :
The nontechnical summary of major findings.
The purpose of the proposed project
The design of the proposed project
Overview of consultation of affected parties
The impacts identified or predicted (magnitude and duration)
Mitigation measures for adverse impacts
Alternatives(zero,location and design)
Read more examples and understand the chains of changes (pressures, effects, impacts)
Check lecture slides and the gpt
What are the key factors to consider when assessing the potential impacts of a project on humans and the environment.
The magnitude: refers to the size and intensity of the impact
Type of o impact : air pollution , eutrophication
Nature : which refers to the specific change the project might cause to the environment/VEC
Extent : refers the geographic reach of the impact
Timing : assess when the impact is likely to occur ( either immediately or sometime after the project).
Duration of the impact
Uncertainty: there is always some level of uncertainty since ecosystems are complex and not fully understood.
Reversibility of the impact
Significance : this refers to assessing the the impact in conjunction with the health or condition off the entire ecosystem/environment as a whole.
What is a VEC(Valued Environmental Components)
This refers to the aspects of the environment considered as important, or sensitive . These could be biophysical (air, water )or socioeconomic (livelihood, quality of life ,etc)
What are the basic things a society must have in order for a successful EIA to occur ?
A common understanding of the aims and benefits of the EIA process .
Clear laws and regulations regarding EIA processes
There must be competent institutions to carry out the EIA
Well functioning administrative system
Financial resources
Active public engagement
Political backing /commitment
What is in an EIA?
The project proponent
The government authorities
The affected parties
What are the possible outcomes of the screening process of an EIA?
It could either be required to get an EIA or not .
If an EIA is required then it is necessary to decide what kind of EIA will be done .
How many possible types of EIA are there ?
Full /comprehensive EIA
Limited EIA
Further examination to determine the EIA required
What does the type of EIA determine ?
The type of EIA chosen determines the decision makers selected and can also facilitate the early involvement of the public
