What is Ethics?
study of good conduct/ character/ the motives concerned with determining what is good/ valuable for all people
What is ethical practice?
development/ implementation of moral reasoning in nursing practice
What is legal practice?
directly impacted by legislation
what is a value?
a strong personal belief/idea

- learning to distinguish between right and wrong

values which are adopted as a result of social setting (as opposed to values adopted from family)
why is it important for nurses to be aware of their personal values?
in order to be able to understand the values of others
What is value clarification?
the process of appraising/ assessing our own personal values (“clarification” does not mean a set of rules that clarifies which values should be adopted by all people)
What are the 3 steps to value clarification?
- choosing/ listing one’s beliefs and behaviors (values)
- prioritizing beliefs and behaviors (values)
- acting on beliefs (utilize your prioritization)

What’s the difference between personal and professional values?
personal are upheld by an individual, professional are upheld by all members of a profession (code of ethics contains values that all nurses uphold in practice)/ based on societies belief
what is the purpose of the code?
- provides guidance for ethical relationships, behaviors and decision making
- used in conjunction with professional standards, best practice, research, laws and regulation

what is professional socialization?
process by which nursing students adopt professional nursing values

nursing ethics is concerned with how broad societal issued affect health and well-being
