Introduction - Systems and Nervous Tissues Flashcards
(9 cards)
Two major subdivision of the nervous system? What are the structures comprising each subdivision
(CNS) - Central Nervous System, consists of brain and spinal cord
(PNS) - Peripheral Nervous System, consists of nerves outside the CNS
Two main types of cells that make up nervous system?
Supporting cells and Neurons
Describe general function of the support cells
- neuroglia and glial cells
- They have a variety of cells that support, insulate, and protect the delicate neurons
Three parts of the neuron and their function
( Cell Body ) - Metabolic centre of the cell (1) It contains the nucleus (2)
( Processes ) - Armlike projections from both ends from the cell (1)
Includes
- Dendrites
- Axon
- Axon Terminal
( Myelin Sheaths ) - Covering composed of a whitish fatty material (Myelin) (1) Insulates fibers (2) Increases rate of transmutation of nerve impulses (3)
What is a Synapse and the role of neurotransmitters in this junction?
Gaps between neurons is called synapse. Neurotransmitters diffuse across synapse to continue cell communication.
Three function classifications of neurons based on direction of nerve impulses
Sensory, Motor, and Interneurons
Sensory Impulses
Impulses from receptors such as the skin to the CNS
Motor Impulses
Carry impulses from the CNS to a muscle or gland
Interneuron Impulses
Connect sensory and motor neurons in the CNS
