Reflexes and Central Nervous System Flashcards
(12 cards)
What are reflexes and their primary purpose
Reflexes are rapid, predictable, and involuntary responses to stimuli
- Protect body
What pathways do reflexes occur in?
Signal goes to the SPINAL CORD
- Occur over a pathway called reflex arc
Five essential elements elements in a reflex part (in order)
- Receptor (Responds to Stimulus)
- Sensory (afferent neuron)
- Integration Centre (Spinal Cord)
- Motor Neuron
- Effector ( Muscle is stimulated )
Somatic vs. Autonomic reflexes
Somatic - Skeletal Muscle
Autonomic - Smooth muscle, heart, and glands
Example of Somatic reflex
- Pulling hand away from hot object
Example of Autonomic reflex
- dilation of pupils
Major functions of the nervous system as a WHOLE
- Uses Sensory receptors to monitor changes happening inside and out.
( Changes are Stimuli and the gathered information is called sensory input ) - Processes and interprets the sensory input (Integration)
- Causes a response ( Motor Output)
Main functions of the Spinal Cord
- Connects the brain to the nerves
- Provides a 2-way path to and from the brain
- Major reflex centre
What are Meninges
Three connective tissue membranes protecting CNS
Function of CSF
- Provides a water cushion for brain and spinal cord
Where is CSF formed
Forms from plasma by clusters of capillaries in cavities called ventricles
Purpose of blood-brain barrier
Protect brain from blood borne substances by least permeable capillaries
