introduction to applied behavior analysis (ABA) Flashcards
(33 cards)
What does Applied mean in the dimensions of ABA?
addresses socially important problems (e.g., reinforcing a child to respond in a park)
What does Behavioral mean in the dimensions of ABA?
changes are observable and measurable
What does Analytic mean in the dimensions of ABA?
demonstrates behavior change is due to intervention
What does Technological mean in the dimensions of ABA?
interventions are replicable with consistent results
What does conceptual mean in the dimensions of ABA?
grounded in theory
what does effective mean in the dimensions of ABA?
produces meaningful, and significant effects
what does generality mean in the dimensions of ABA?
behaviors transfer across environments and persists after treatments
What is behavior in ABA?
observable and measurable actions (always neutral - behavior = response)
What is the dead man’s test?
if a dead man can do it, it’s not a behavior
What is observable & measurable behavior?
must be clear and quantifiable (eating a donut or saying hello etc.)
what is not observable behavior?
vague terms like “attitude problem” that are not measurable
what is reinforcement?
anything consequence that increases a behavior
what is positive reinforcement?
adding a pleasant stimulus (giving candy or toys)
What is negative reinforcement?
removing an aversive stimulus (no extra homework for completing classwork)
what qualities make effective reinforcers?
- must be liked/valued by the individual
- must be delivered immediately after a behavior
- Avoid overuse
what is a primary reinforcer?
a biological need (food, bathroom, rest etc.)
what is a secondary reinforcer?
a learned association (money, toys, crafts)
what is positive punishment?
adding unpleasant stimulus (scolding, squirt bottle, spanking)
what is negative punishment?
removing pleasant stimulus (taking a toy, turning off music/game/show, turning on the big lights, cleaning up one’s own messes)
what are the ethical use requirements for punishment?
ensure health, safety, and rights; while using least intrusive methods
what is the 3 term contingency?
antecedent (trigger)
behavior (action/response)
consequence (reinforcer behavior)
(ABC)
give an example of the 3-term contingency
doorbell - answer door - get package
what are the 2 behavior functions?
escape behavior and gain behavior
