Introduction to Ecology Flashcards
(11 cards)
What is ecology?
study of interactions between organisms and the environment
What is the property of life: organization/order?
- smallest to largest unit of matter
- organelles - cells - tissue - organs - organ systems - organisms - population - community - ecosystem - biosphere
What is the property of life: sensitivity/response to stimuli?
- positive response: towards a stimuli
- negative response: away from a stimuli
- chemotoxis: movement from chemicals
- phototoxis: movement related to light
What is the property of life: reproduction?
- duplication of a single celled organism or multicellular formation of a zygote
What is the property of life: adaption?
- an organisms fit in their environment as a result of natural selection
What is the property of life: growth and development?
genes direct growth of organism and cell development
What is the property of life: homeostasis?
ability to maintain stable internal conditions
What is the property of life: energy processing?
all organism require a source of energy
What is the property of life: evolution?
mutations over time to allow adaption
what is biogeography?
spatial distribution and abiotic factors affecting organism distribution
What are abiotic factors?
solar energy, water, soil, inorganic nutrients, temperature
