A

High, needs a large amount of energy to break strong ionic bonds between oppositely charged ions.

Q

Are ionic solids brittle?

A

Yes, due to the nature of lattice.

When you force ions with the same charge together they repel.

Q

Are ionic solids soluble in water?

A

Yes, due to attractive forces from polar of water molecules (a polar solvent).

Q

Are ionic solids soluble in non-polar solvents?

A

No, non-polar molecules can not exert force to overcome the ionic bonds.

Q

Do ionic solids conduct electricity?

A

No, there are charge particles (ions) present but they are trapped in the 3D lattice structure (fixed position) and are not free to move around.
But once melted or dissolved in water the ions are free to move around and will conduct electricity.
