Ionice Bonding Flashcards
(7 cards)
What does ionic bonding consist of?
a metal and non metal
what are the properties of ionic bonding
- high melting point
- brittle
- conduct in only liquid / aqueous form
- hard
why does it have a high melting / boiling point?
Electrostatic forces of attraction are so strong, needs great amount of energy to overcome those forces.
why is it hard?
due to large lattice, lots of atoms to exert equal and opposite force back at you.
why are they brittle?
distortion to lattice causes electrostatic repulsion between charged ions (opposites attract)
why do they only conduct in aqueous form?
because in liquid form, ions are delocalised and mobile which allows flow of charge.
why can’t they conduct in solid form?
because ions are localised and ions are immobile in the lattice making charge not being able to flow
