Metallic Bonding Flashcards
(7 cards)
What are the properties of Metallic Bonding?
- Good conductors of electricity & thermal
- malleable / ductile
- hard
- high melting / boiling point
- Lustrous
- dense
What does the metallic bonding structure consist of?
sea of delocalised electrons (free-moving electrons between cations in the lattice structure)
Why are they good conductors?
because of their free-moving electrons & they are mobile in the lattice that allows the flow of charge.
delocalised electrons
Why are they lustrous?
delocalised electrons that cause reflection of light
why are they malleable / ductile?
the electrostatic forces of attractions in lattice, the distortion to the lattice doesn’t disrupt those forces.
why do they have a high melting / boiling point?
because of electrostatic forces of attractions are so strong, it needs a great amount of energy to overcome those forces
why are metals hard?
due to large lattice, lots of atoms exert equal and opposite forces back at you
