Used to protect the appearance or look of a product
Product MUST have individuality; cannot remind an informed person of another product
gives the designer the right to prevent others using it for up to 25 years and must be renewed every 5 years

Protect a sign or symbol- including words, pics, logos or combo of them.
Used to protect brands
Tm in the UK lasts forever, subject to renewal being paid every 10 years

to be granted a patent, the invention MUST be something that can be made or used
