IQ1 Flashcards
(15 cards)
Filtration
Seperation based on physical property of particle size. Solution passes through ilter, suspended solid remains on top. Liquid that passes through is the filtrate.
Seperation based on boiling points
Since liquid has a lower boiling point than solid the liquid can be vaporised. Useful to obtain the solid. Done by either evaporation or vaporisation. Separation based on the physical property of boiling point.
Sedimentation and decanting
Solids settle to the bottum. Process of pouring off liquid and leaving solid undisturbed. Separation based on the physical property of Density.
Centrifuging
Seperates substances based on density. Heavier particle move to the bottum where as lighter ones stat on top. E.g seperating blood components. Separation based on the physical property of Density.
Distillation
Solution boiled with the vapour formed being condensed back into a liquid. Liquid becomes the distillate. If impurities non-volatile is beomces pure. 2 or more liquid can be seperated if boiling points and different. If boiling points are close than distillate will not be pure. Separation based on the physical property of boiling point.
Fractional Distillation
Mixture of liquid with close boiling points seperated by successive distillations from 10 to 100. E.g seperation of crude oils in e.g fuel production. Separation based on the physical property of Boiling points.
Separating Immiscible liquids.
Immiscible liquids don’t form a homogeneous mixture as the density’s are different. Hence, they settle into layers. Opening the tap can let out the lower level. Separation based on the physical property of Density
Sieve
Larger solids stay in sieve where as smaller solids fall through. Separation based on the physical property of particle size.
Magnetism
Magnet pulls out metal within a mixture. Separation based on the physical property of Magnetism
Gravimetric Analysis
Separating the components of a mixture and accurately determining their mass so the percentage composition can be analysed.
Gravimetric analysis
Qualitative composition of a mixture. Mass of each substance present. Percentage composition.
Reasons could include:
Mining,
Medicine compounds.
Characteristics of medals
Solids at room temperature
Having a shiny or lustrous appearance.
Good conductors
Malleable
Ductile
Characteristic of non-metal
Solids and gases at room temp
Generally have a dull non-lustruous appearance
are generally poor conductors of heat and electricity
Are neither malleable nor ductile.
Semi-metals
Elements that have characteristics of both non-metals and metals.
Periodic table
Verticle columns= groups
horizontal rows= Periods.
