Q
Is this a dagger which I see before me… The handle towards my hand?”
A
Macbeth first sees this ‘dagger’ and believes it’s drawing him to Duncan, it’s urging him to act on it. He must choose between what’s morally right and his ambition to be King. The rhetorical question he asks himself shows his uncertainty as he questions whether this is his mind tricking him or if he’s really seeing a dagger. This soliloquy represents how Macbeth’s ambition repels him to commit an act of regicide that’ll come to haunt him in the future.
