Isomers Flashcards

Q

If an isomer is superimposable upon its mirror image with rotation about the center, what is it known as? What about if it’s not?

A

It’s known as a geometric isomer if you can superimpose itself on its mirror image. Else it’s known as an optical isomer. All optical isomers are chiral but that’s not necessarily true for geometric isomers. If the isomer was trans, then if it is also a geometric isomer then it is achiral.

Q

Whats a pair of enantiomers?

A

If something is chiral, the complex and it’s mirror image are referred to as that

Q

What makes a molecule optically active?

A

If it’s chiral it is optically active else if it’s achiral, it’s optically inactive.
