2 → religious connotations to purgatory - chain might be heavy to showcase he is stuck in purgatory - so many sins to cleanse - scares the religious readers
3 → chain might not be literal, yet is instead the weight of his sins on his soul - emblematic to Scrooge’s “soul of lead”
