Joints and Ligaments Flashcards
Block 1 (15 cards)
Joint categories
fibrous, cartilaginous, synovial
what are joints (articulations)
formed where two or more bones come together, some allow movement between the bones, some are firm - allow limited or no moation
Fibrous joints
designed for limited ot no movement
Fibrous joint examples
- Sutures of skull
- Teeth in sockets
Cartilaginous joints
Semi-movable joints, some restricted motion, joined by hyaline cartilage or fibrocartilage
Cartilaginous joints examples
intervertebral discs, pelvic symphysis, mandibular symphysis
Synovial joints
articulating bones that are seperated by fluid-filled space (joint cavity)
Synovial joints examples
joints between limbs, joints betweeen articular processes of vertebrae, joints between ribs and vertebrae
which joint type is the most common
Synovial joints
Defining festures of Synovial joints
- articulating bones ends covered by articular cartilage
- joint cavity filled with synovial fluid produced by synovial membrane
- Fibrous joint capsule lined by synovial membrane
Accessory structures for joint stability
ligament and meniscus
Extracapsular
one the side, collateral, patellar
Ligament
band of tough fibrous conneective tissue that connects bone to bone or bone to cartilage
Intra-capsular
inside, cruciate
Meniscus
fibrocartilage disc within a synovial cavity, allows for smoother conection between articulating ends of bones
