Finite verbs
- can stand alone / on its own
- does not need a helping verb
- must have a subject, singular, plural or tense
- A finite verb + a subject = sentence
Example:
She plays the piano beautifully.
They went to the park yesterday.
Infinitive verb
- preceded by to
- it cannot stand alone
- it needs a finite verb
- it should not be split
Example:
She loves to read before bed.
They decided to go to the beach.
Auxiliary / Helping verbs
- precedes a verb (She has spoken.)
- it regulates the tense
- sometimes it needs to function as the main verb
Example:
She is studying for her exam.
Linking verb
- To be…
- Is am are
- Connects a noun with another noun
- Connects a noun with an adjective
- The word that follows it, is a complement
Example:
She is happy
Participles verb
- When we combine an auxiliary verb with a finite verb -ing or -ed
- The tap is leaking
- She has eaten
- Present - continious nature - ing
- Past - ed, d, en, n
- She was given a chance.
