(11 cards)
metabolic rate
measurement of energy consumed by an organism over a period of time
how do u measure metabolic rate?
with a calorimeter or respirometer
calorimeter
instrument used to measure heat energy produced in given period of time. Does this by measuring water temp before and after leaving the calorimeter
respirometer
measurement of oxygen consumed or carbon dioxed produced
oxygen delivery
as energy demands of an organism increase, the consumption of oxygen also increases
circulatory systems in vertebrates
closed circulatory systems where blood is contained in a continuous circuit of blood vessels which are kept moving by a muscular pump (heart)
fish gills
gas absorption occurs in the gills for fish as water flows over filaments oxygen diffuses down the concentration gradient into the blood
double circulatory systems (vertebrates)
when the blood passes through the heart twice with high pressure and vigorous flow
incomplete circulatory systems (amphibians+reptiles)
only 1 ventricle and some mixing of oxygenated blood for lungs and deoxygenated blood from the body occurs
single circulatory systems (fish)
blood passes through a 2 chambered heart once for each circuit of the body. Blood flows to gills at high pressure but delivered in capillaries with low pressure.
complete circulatory systems (vertebrates)
2 ventricles, separated by a septum. It enables endothermic vertebrates to deliver oxygenated blood to respiring tissues and to pick up heat energy released
