Kahneman (1993) Flashcards
Peak-end-rule cold water (3 cards)
Aim
To test whether peak-end-rule bias would have an effect on participants when made to put their hand in cold water
Method
Participants told to put their hand in painfully cold water until told to remove it
* with free hand: recorded pain (1 = little to none, 5 = strong)
* repeated measures design:
* condition 1: 60 seconds, 14C water
* condition 2: 90 second immersion - first 60 same as C1, end of 60 slightly warmer water
* then asked P to choose a condition to repeat
Results
80% chose condition 2
* second trial took longer & first 60 seconds was the same as first trial (duration neglect)
* they were basing choice on how the condition ended rather than making an overall assessment of the pain
