What does the Authority Having Jurisdiction (AHJ) refer to?
The organization, office, or individual with final authority for approving equipment, materials, installations, or procedures within a specific governmental or administrative territory, and regulating trades, professions, devices, or systems. This could include a fire chief, building official, or program administrator. In cases of overlap, state law identifies the AHJ with the highest level of authority and responsibility.
Give a definition of Building Science.
The study of the interaction between building construction materials, products, assemblies, subsystems, the whole building system, its occupants, and their environments. It also includes the practices or procedures needed to achieve desired outcomes, particularly quality, high-performance buildings
Where is Air Free Carbon Monoxide (CO) and how is it measured?
Emission levels calculated by a mathematical equation that converts an actual diluted flue gas carbon monoxide testing sample to an undiluted air-free flue gas carbon monoxide level, used in appliance certification standards. The formula for natural gas or LP gas uses as-measured CO ppm and O2 percentage, or ultimate CO2 concentration when an Oxygen meter is unavailable.
What is the Combustion Appliance Zone (CAZ)?
The room and enclosed air volume that contains a combustion appliance. This can include a mechanical room, mechanical closet, or the main body of the house.
What is a Direct Vent Appliance?
An appliance constructed and installed to derive all combustion air directly from the outdoors and discharge all flue gases to the outdoors through a closed system (e.g., PVC pipe)
What is the Lower Explosive Limit (LEL)?
The minimum concentration of combustible vapor or gas in a mixture with a gaseous oxidant, above which propagation of flame will occur upon contact with an ignition source
What is Spillage?
The entry of combustion products into a building from dilution air inlets, vent connector joints, induced draft fan case openings, combustion air inlets, or other parts of the combustion or venting system of a vented combustion appliance. It is caused by backdrafting, vent blockage, or leaks in the venting system
What is the Thermal Boundary?
The insulation boundary that separates conditioned from non-conditioned spaces in a building. It should be continuous and aligned with the pressure boundary
What is the Pressure Boundary?
The barrier that prevents the infiltration of outdoor air into the conditioned space and the exfiltration of indoor air to the outside. It should be continuous, aligned with the thermal boundary, and effective in stopping most air leakage.
What is Baseload Energy Use?
Energy or fuel consumed by household devices that have little to no dependence on outside air temperature, such as lighting, kitchen appliances, cleaning appliances, domestic water heaters, and other frequently or constantly used electronic devices. Distinct from seasonal energy use, which depends on outside temperature
