How does Renal Dialysis work?

A
  • Patient’s blood is passed through a membrane surrounded by a dialysis fluid
  • Urea + waste products diffuse out
  • Glucose, water, ions return to normal concentration.

How is a Kidney Transplant carried out?

A
  • Donor must have same blood type and tissue types as the recipient.
  • Otherwise donated kidney would be recognised as foreign
  • antigens will be different
  • immune system will reject the kidney
  • immunosupressant drugs used
