Kinetics Flashcards
(8 cards)
Reactions can only occur under these requirements (3)
- Sufficient energy (activation energy)
- Two particles colliding
- Collide in correct orientation
Increase in temperature leads to what?
particles get more energy so more speed and => more frequent collisions => INCREASES RATE OF REACTION
Increasing surface area increases what?
Increases chances of collisions + more exposure of reactants
Increasing concentration leads to what?
More particles so => more frequent collisions => increased rate of reaction
Increasing pressure does what?
Increases frequency of collisions => rate of reaction increases
What do all the factors of rate of reaction (Pressure, Concentration, Temperature, and Surface area) all result in
More frequent successful collisions between reacting particles
What does adding a catalyst do?
- Provide an alternative pathway with a lower activation energy
- Increase the rate of reaction while remaining chemically unchanged at the end of the reaction.
In the distribution of a catalyst, what happens to the shape of graph in maxwell-boltzmann distribution?
Is the same but the activation energy is REDUCED. Meaning more molecules have energy greater than the activation energy.
