Kinetics Flashcards
(6 cards)
Collision theory
Explain how chemical reactions occur and why reaction rates differ.
Reactions happen when particles collide with enough energy and proper orientation
Maxwell-Boltzmann distribution
Describes the spread of energies of particles in a gas showing that most particles have moderate energy with fewer having very low or very high energies
Effect of temperature on Maxwell-Boltzmann distribution
Increasing temperature makes curve flatter and broader.
Shifting the peak to higher energy and increasing the number of particles with enough energy to react
Effect of concentration on Maxwell-Boltzmann distribution
No change to the shape
Effect of pressure on Maxwell-Boltzmann distribution
Does not change the shape
Effect of a catalyst on Maxwell-Boltzmann distribution
Increases the rate of reaction by finding an alternative path
Shape of graph is not changed
