Kinetics, Energetics & Equilibria Flashcards
(5 cards)
What is Le Chatelier’s Principle?
If a system at equilibrium is disturbed, it will shift in a direction that opposes the change to restore equilibrium.
How does temperature affect equilibrium?
Increase temp → shifts in endothermic direction
Decrease temp → shifts in exothermic direction.
How does pressure affect equilibrium?
Increase pressure → shifts to side with fewer gas molecules
Decrease pressure → shifts to side with more gas molecules.
How does concentration affect equilibrium?
Add more reactant → shifts right (makes more product)
Add more product → shifts left (makes more reactant)
Remove something → shifts to replace what was removed.
What effect does a catalyst have on equilibrium?
No effect on position of equilibrium — just reaches it faster.
