KSS Flashcards
(15 cards)
Random sampling
When every member of the population has an equal chance of being selected
Convenient sampling
A sample is selected using the quickest and easiest means possible, selecting people who are readily available from the population
Stratified sample
Population is divided into groups based on relevant characteristics; participants are selected from each group of the proportion of how they are in the population
control groups
Group that is not exposed to the experimental conditions (IV)
Independent variable (IV)
Manipulated or changed by the experimenter in order to measure the effect on the dependent variable
Dependent variable (DV)
Observed or measured and is expected to change as a result of the manipulation of the independent variable
What must you include in a hypothesis
population (eg, peninsular students)
IV
DV
Prediction (direction)
Experimental group
Group exposed to the experimental conditions (IV)
Between subjects
participants in the study are split through random allocation into two or more groups (control- not exposed to the IV, and experimental- Exposed to the IV)
Within subjects
The same participants are in both the control and the experimental conditions. They participate in one condition than the other
Informed consent
Participants must be told about the nature, risks and rights before the experiment
Primary data
Collected through first-hand experience for an intended purpose
Secondary data
Obtained second hand through research conducted or data collected by another person for another purpose
Qualitive
Describes characteristics and qualities, this data can be in the form of words, photographs, videos, audio and other recordings that are not measured with a number
Quantitative
Measurable values and quantities and can be compared on a numerical scale, this data can be in the form of measurements such as length, weight or time, or in the form of frequencies and tallies
