What is it used for
Describes how different processes develop through 4 sequencial stages from birth to adolescence
What is stage 1, and short description
Sensorimotor stage
- Age birth - 2yrs
- Infants construct their understanding of the world by coordinating sensory and motor activities
What are the key accomplishments for Sensorimotor stage
Goal dirrect behaviour
- behaviour with a purpose in mind, or to achieve something
Objective permanence
- know that objects are permanent, they don’t not exist when out of sight
What is stage 2, and short description
Pre operational stage
- Ages 2 - 7 yrs
- Children are increasingly able to think about and imagine things in their own minds
What are the key accomplishments of the Pre opperational stage
Egocentism
- Only capable of seeing world from their point of view
Animism
- Beleif that everything that exists has feelings and concousness
Concentration
Transformation
-Understanding that something can change from one state to another (icecream mealts)
Reversibility
- Ability to follow a line of reasoning back to its original starting point (max has a brother Zac, who is Zacs brother?)
What is stage 3, and short description
Concrete operational stage
-Ages 7 -12 yrs
-The way children think revolves around what they know and what they can experience through their sense
What are the key accomplishments in Concrete operational stage
Classification
- Ability to organise information into catagories based on commen fetures
Conservation
- Idea that an object does not change its essential proporties when its shape or apperence changes
What is stage 4, and short descpition
Formal operational stage
- Ages 12+ yrs
- More complex though processes become apparent and thinking becomes more sophisticated
What are the key accomplishments in formal operational stage
Logical thinking
-refers to the ability to think in a systematic way, develop plan to solve a problem (algebra)
Abstract thinking
- Thinking that does not rely on being able to see or visulize things in order to understand concepts (justice or guilt)
