Militarism

A

The belief that a state should develop a strong military capability and to use it aggressively to expand or defend its national interests. It is often linked to the glorification of the military by society.

Alliance

A

An agreement between two or more states for mutual support during war. All members of the alliance agree to assist each other by joining forces if one or more of then is attacked by another state or alliance. An alliance can be informal but is usually formed through the signing of a treaty.

Imperialism

A

A policy of extending a country’s power, influence and control over another country through colonisation, use of military force, economic control or other means. An empire is the country extending control. A colony or protectorate is the country being controlled.

Nationalism

A

A political ideology that places loyalty and devotion to one’s nation above all other groups and loyalties. It involves an identification with one’s own nation and support for its interests over the interests of other nations/ethnicities.
