Franz Ferdinand visits Sarajevo
-FF = conservative, anti-democratic but pro Slavic autonomy / turn AH into a federation with separate states for each nationality/ wanted to decrease H influence in AH
-Official visit = inspect condition of army in bosnia but intended to inspire loyalty to AH and decrease nationalist feelings / wanted to go in a open top car w/ light security + had sophia in the car as well
-Black Hand decided to use it as an opportunity to assassinate the heir to AH throne / Goal: Free Bosnia + join with Serbia to create a pan-Slavic state / * 28 June = day of national pride for Serbs = assassination = symbolic meaning for Serbs / 6 Bosnian Serbs under 20yrs old + citizens of AH chosen for assassination / Set up along Franz Ferdinand’s route armed with weapons + explosives provided by Serbian military agents
Aftermath of Assassination
-b/c of assassination, a wave of anti-Serb riots broke out across AH / AH undertook a criminal investigation → arrest of assassins + interrogations revealed their connections with Serbian military intelligence / AH + Germany demanded Serbia + Russian assist in the investigation, but they refused / 25 tried, resulting in 5 death sentences, 9 acquittals + the rest receiving jail terms of 3 yrs – life + Princip given 20 yrs in prison but died of tuberculosis in 1918
-All except one minister in AH wanted war against Serbia even though Russia would join -> some ppl wanted a swift attack w/o declaration of war but some ppl wanted a ultimatum b4 attack
-AH reps met with German govt to ensure support of attack -> given unconditional support even in the case of war even w/ russian intervention bc believed it would be quick and local to Balkans
- w/ german support, AH sent a harsh ultimatum to serbia -> had to reject them -> war
