Austria’s Ultimatum to Serbia
-French + Russia leaders met in St. Petersburg to discuss the situation in the Balkans / Agreed alliance extended to protecting Serbia against AH / Russia asked Germany to pressure Austria into backing down, but this was ignored
-AH gave an ultimatum to Serbia demanding : condemn all “anti-AH propaganda” from the press + official documents/Dissolve all Serbian nationalist groups +arrest all members involved in planning the assassination/ Accept “reps of the AH govt” for the “suppression of subversive movements” / Allow AH police into Serbia to participate in investigations into the assassination
-had to reply in 48hrs or war
-Serbia agreed to all except letting police in bc it limited their independence -> AH withdrew their ambassador -> Serbia mobilized bc expected war -> AH mobilized -> Russia partially mobilized -> France cancelled military leave
-AH declared war or Serbia -> full Russian mobilization to force Ah to withdraw -> Germany mobilized and declared war on Russia -> france mobilized
The Schlieffen Plan
-German war w/ Russia = dangerous bc -> war w/ france so then fighting war on 2 fronts but bc of Russia’s size and poor infrastructure they believed it
would take 6 weeks for them to mobilize
-Schlieffen Plan = plan to fight war on 2 fronts developed since 1905 / germany would go through Belgium to surprise france + encircle them and force them to surrender -> france knocked out of war b4 Russia can help but relied on England not following up on treaty of London and helping Belgium /
-Germany declared war on france -> wanted free passage through Belgium but they declined -> germany declared war on germany -> Britain declared war on germany -> start of WW1
