L4: Diffusion. Flashcards

1
Q

What is the definition of diffusion?

A

It is the movement of particles from a region where they are at a higher concentration to a region where they are at a lower concentration. This process doesn’t require energy.

Q

Why is diffusion important in respiration - gas exchange?

A

Because in breathing, you exchange carbon dioxide and oxygen between the lungs and the blood vessels. This is an example of diffusion.

Q

Why is diffusion important in photosynthesis?

A

Carbon dioxide diffuses in through the stomata. Oxygen and water diffuse out of the stomata.

Q

In terms of diffusion, what happens when a tea bag goes into boiling water?

A

The tea in the tea bag will diffuse and dissolve the boiling water as the tea bag has a high concentration of tea whereas the water has no concentration of tea, resulting in the high concentration of tea to go to the area with a low concentration of tea.

Q

Does diffusion occur faster in hot or cold water and why?

A

In hot water because the hot water has more kinetic energy than the cold water.
