(7 cards)
DSM 5
- presence of obsessions, compulsions, both
- time consuming: > 1 hour/day or sign. distress/impairment
- not attributable to substance or another condition
obsessions
recurrent and persistent thoughts, impulses or images that are intrusive and cause marked anxiety or distress, but are not excessive worries about real-life problems. The person attempts to ignore, supress or neutralize these thoughts, impulses or images
compulsions
repetitive behaviors or mental acts that the person feels driven to perform in response to an obsession. The behaviors or mental acts are directed at preventing or reducing distress or dreaded events or situations. These behaviors or mental acts may not always be associated with the content of the obsessional theme
exposure and response prevention (ERP)
gradual exposure to fear triggers without performing rituals
thought-action fusion
the phenomena that a person assumes that a certain thought leads definitely to a certain act
emotional processing theory (EPT)
Confrontation with a feared stimulus during exposure activates a fear structure (set op propositions about the feared stimulus, response and their meaning that is stored in memory). aim of exposure therapy is to help patients develop new nonthreat associations and ways of enhancing accessibility of these new associations
