Political parties
organizations of people holding a shared set of values and ideas with the aim of getting their members elected to parliament.
Independents
those who run for or are elected to parliament that are not affiliated with a political party
Labor party
Major center left party political party of Australia been established on the 8th of may 1901.
often referred to as the party of unions and continues to advocate for workers rights
Liberal Party
Major center right political party of Australia, founded in 1944
traditionally supporting business owners
election
the process whereby eligible people vote to choose a person to hold a position in a body or organization
Preferential voting
a form of voting whereby voters rank their choices for candidates on the ballot paper, with the full value of their vote transferring if their highest choice is eliminated until the votes indicate a winner by majority (over 50%)
Referendum
a national vote to change the wording of the constitution (add or delete words)
