Yeh-Shen is forced to live with her step mother and sister because both of her parents died
How were Yeh-Shen and her half-sister different (there are several differences)?
Yeh-Shen and her half-sister are different because Yeh-Shen is more beautiful, and Yeh-Shen has to do strenuous chores while her sister doesn’t.
How did Yeh–Shen’s stepmother trick the fish into coming onto the bank of the pond? Why did she do this?
Yeh-Shen’s stepmother sent Yeh-Shen to get some firewood, and took her jacket, and the fish recognized her mother as Yeh-Shen. She did this because Yeh-Shen held it a secret and because she wanted to make her unhappy.
Who was the old man and why did he come to see Yeh-shen?
The old man was the “fairy godmother” of this story, and he came to tell her that the bones of her fish would help her when she needed it.
Why didn’t Yeh–Shen’s stepmother want Yeh–Shen to go to the festival?
She wanted to find her daughter someone to marry, and not Yeh-Shen. She was afraid that a boy would see her first and her actual daughter.
Where does the slippers’ magic come from? What about their appearance gives you a clue?
The Slippers’ magic comes from the remains of Yeh-Shen’s fish, because she described them as having “scales” on them, like a fish.
Why did Yeh-Shen run away from the festival?
Yeh-Shen ran away from the festival because her half-sister saw her, and she was afraid she would recognize her.
Upon her return home, Yeh-Shen finds that the magic bones will no longer talk to her. Why do you think they’d stopped?
The magic bones stopped talking to her because she broke her promise of not losing the shoes.
How does the golden shoe make its way back to the king?
The shoe made it to the king from a merchant. A villager sold it to him, and the merchant brought it to the king.
How did the king find out where Yeh–Shen lived?
The king had ordered his men to follow Yeh-Shen home.
What happens as soon as Yeh-Shen tries on the slipper?
When Yeh-Shen puts the slipper back on, her dress appears again.
Why won’t the kind allow Yeh-Shen’s step-mother and sister come to the palace with them?
The king won’t allow Yeh-Shen’s step-mother and sister in because they treated her poorly.

Winnowing is a method of separating the grain from the husks.

Persephone was the daughter of Demeter, and she lived in Sicily.

Hades wanted to marry Persephone, and he seeked permission from Zeus.

A beautiful white and purple flower that looked like a narcissus, and from a single root a hundred blossoms sprung, and when she went to pick it, the earth opened and Hades took Persephone to the Underworld in his chariot.

Demeter was very distraught and sad of her daughter’s disappearance, and there was no harvest until she found her daughter.
Why do you think Demeter lies to the family about her identity?
I think Demeter lies to the family about her identity because gods can’t show themselves in their true form, and possibly wanted to see if the daughters would believe her.
What are Demeter’s plans for the baby that is placed in her care? How does the child’s mother find out?
Demeter wants to turn the child immortal and make him one of her own, and the mother stays up one night to watch her, and she sees Demeter put her baby in the fire.
What is ambrosia?
Ambrosia is the food of the gods.
Since Demeter has been mourning the loss of her daughter, what has happened to the earth?
The mourning of Demeter caused the death of the plants, and it became cold outside.
How did Hades trick Demeter’s daughter? As a result of this action, what happens to earth for part of the year?
Hades told Persephone to dine with him before he left, so she took a pomegranate and ate seven of its seeds. Because she ate the seven seeds, she has to stay in the Underworld for seven months, while the other five she gets to stay with her mother. During the seven months she is gone, Demeter mourns, and in result, winter and fall occur.
According to the myth, what made Orpheus’ music so special? What effect did he have on things around him?
What made Orpheus’ music so special was that it was so beautiful and charming, it drew things toward him, like vines, trees, rocks, animals and nymphs.
What happened to Eurydice on her wedding day?
Eurydice went to the riverside to collect flowers for a bridal garland, and was bitten by a snake, and died.
