ligaments of the lower extremity
Sacrotuberous ligament Sacrospinous ligament
-Patellar ligament
what is the fascia lata?
- attaches superiorly to the inguinal ligament / pubic arch/ body of pubis/ pubic tubercle / laterally and posteriorly to the iliac crest and posteriorly to the sacrum/ coccyx/ sacrotuberous ligament and ischial tuberosity
what is the saphenous opening?
inferior to the medial part of the inguinal ligament
-permits passage of the great saphenous vein
what are the femoral triangle boundaries?
superior= inguinal ligament
medially= adductor longus
laterally= sartorius muscle
roof= fascia lata / subcutaneous tissue / skin
floor= iliopsoas and pectineus muscles
apex= where sartorius and adductor longus cross
what is in the femoral triangle?
- femoral nerve
- femoral sheath
-femoral vein - femoral artery
- lymph nodes
what is the femoral sheath?
- fascial tube that extend inferiorly from the inguinal ligament
- continuation of the transversalis fascia of the abdominal wall / fascia covering the iliopsoas muscle
what is the purpose of the femoral sheath?
- allow femoral vessel to glide beneath inguinal ligament during hip movement
what does the femoral sheath not contain?
femoral nerve
what are the compartments of the femur?
-lateral
-intermediate
-medial
what is the femoral ring?
- proximal opening into the femoral canal
what is the femoral canal?
- normally empty
- medial compartment is the femoral canal
what is the adductor canal?
fascia tunnel about 15cm long deep to middle 1/3 of sartorius muscle
- provide passageway through musculature for the vessels to reach popliteal fossa
What is the adductor hiatus?
the distal end of the adductor canal= opening between the aponeurotic attachment of the adductor part of the adductor magnus + tendon of the hamstring part
what is the gluteal aponeurosis?
- fascia that covers the gluteal muscles
- thicker over the anterior 2/3 of gluteus muscle
- between iliac crest and superior border of the gluteus maximus muscle
what is the iliotibial tract?
thickened lateral component of hte fascia lata
- encloses tensor fascia lata /gluteus maximus
- attaches distally to the tubercle of the lateral condyle of the tibia
