Functional Testing
Informs clinicians of a patients ability to perform activities of daily living.
6 minute walk test
Used to assess
-Aerobic capacity and endurance in children and geriatric populations
-Compares O2 saturation during activity compared to rest
6MW test protocol
- Set cones 100 feet apart
- Have PT sit and measure resting HR
- Have PT walk laps and tally the number done after 6 minutes
- When time ends, immediately measure HR
- Record total distance
Short physical performance battery
3 total tests:
1. 5 chair stands
2. Balance battery (10 sec hold)
3. 4 meter gait speed
Chair stand
-Arms crossed over chest
-PT is seated with feet flat on floor
-PT must stand all the way up and sit down as quickly as possible
-Time stopes when PT stands all the way up on stand 5
Chair stand scoring
0: more than 60 seconds
1: 16.7-60 seconds
2: 13.7-16.69 seconds
3: 11.2-13.69 seconds
4: 11.19 seconds or less
Balance Battery tests
-Side by side stand
-Semi tandem stand
-Tandem stand
Side by side
-Feet together, use wall to stand and balance
-Toes and heels touching
Semi-Tandem stand
-One foot half a step forward, toes of one foot nestled beside arch of other foot
Tandem Stand
-Heel of one foot directly in front of the other
Scoring for Side-by-Side and Semi-Tandem stand
Side by Side & Semi Tandem
1: Held for 10 seconds
0: Not held for 10 seconds or not attempted
Scoring for tandem stand
2: Held for 10 sec
1: Held for 3-9.99 sec
0: Held for < 3 sec
Gait speed test
-Set cones 4 meters apart
-Time patient walking at a “fast paced speed between cones”
Gait speed test scoring
1: >8.70 seconds
2: 6.21-8.70 seconds
3: 4.82-6.20 seconds
4: <4.82 seconds
