Lab 9: Strength Testing Flashcards
Isometric Muscle Contractions
Muscle contracts but does not change length
Concentric muscle contraction
Muscle shortens during contraction
Eccentric muscle contraction
Muscle lengthens during contraction
Amount of force generated during muscle contraction depends on:
-Type of motor units recruited
-Number of motor units recruited
-Initial muscle length
-The nature of motor units stimulation
Purpose of isometric strength training
-Ability to isolate a muscle group to determine strength/weakness
-Assess changes in strength after training program
-Assess mobility and muscle strength of individuals with orthopedic problems since PT isnt required to move an external weighted force & less dynamic strain on joints/tendons
-Measures force production
