Fasting Blood Glucose: usage and levels
A
Less than 100
Must fast for greater than 6hr for adult
Used for diabetes screenings

A
5%-7%
Reflects the average BG level over the last 2-3 months

Cholesterol and Lipid levels
A
- Refer for further testing if total cholesterol is >240 mg/dl, HDL < 35 mg/dl
- Indicates fat metabolism
- Indicates cardiovascular risk

Triglycerides
A
Adult: fasting <150 mg/dl
Blood fats, used to screen for hyperlipidemia, values are age related and debated in the literature

Serum Albumin
A
3.5-5.5 g/dl
- Measures visceral protein status
- Long half life (17-20 days)=long term protein status
- moderately malnourished 2.8-3.5 g/dl
- severely malnourished <2.8 g/dl

Transferrin
A
170-250 mg/dl
- Iron transport protein
- Shorter half life (8-10 days)=more sensitive indicator of protein status than albumin
- moderately malnourished 100-150mg/dl
- severely malnourished <100 mg/dl

- Weight in kg/height in meters squared
