What is ABS?
ABS is an electronic system designed to monitor wheel speed at all times and control wheel speed during braking.
In the event of an ABS malfunction, what happens to the ABS system?
In the event of a malfunction in the system, the ABS in the affected wheel(s) is disabled. That wheel still has normal brakes. All other wheels retain the ABS function.
How is system status communicated to the driver?
ABS system has a light which will remain on should there be a problem with the system.
If the ABS light is on, how are the brakes affected?
The braking system has normal function.
How often should the step air tank and the air brake tanks be drained?
Once per week, per the apparatus daily check sheet.
How many chassis air tanks do the apparatus usually have?
Our apparatus typically have 4 air tanks.
Where is the tank located that supplies the air for the drop down steps?
This tank is separate from the air tanks that supply braking, and is located on the right side above the right front wheel.
What are some of the consequences of not draining the tanks?
If the chassis air and step air systems are not properly drained at least once a week, slow operation of the systems will occur, as well as damage to the brake and step air components. Leaks will also develop due to the condensation and oil deteriorating the rubber and metal components.
What are the all steer control system modes?
- Front Steer mode
- Coordinated steering
- Fire ground mode
How many modes are there to Fire Ground Mode, and what are they?
There are 2 different modes in Fire Ground:
- Coordinated steering
- Crab steer
In both Coordinated Steering mode and Fire Ground Mode, how does the coordinated steering work?
When front wheel is turned past the dead band, the rear wheels turn proportionally in the opposite direction of the front wheels.
What is the dead band?
The number of degrees the front wheels must be turned to the right or left before the rear wheels also turn is referred to as the dead band.
How do the rear wheels move when in Fire Ground / Crab Mode?
When operating in the fire ground/crab steer, the rear wheels turn proportionally in the same direction as the front wheels to allow the vehicle to move sideways in a diagonal manner.
What is the maximum operating speed for Coordinated steer?
35mph
What is the maximum operating speed for Fire Ground Modes?
10mph
What ways are used to notify the driver that they are in Fire Ground Mode?
When selecting fire ground mode, the indicator light (located in the lower portion of the fire ground mode selector switch) comes on; and an audible alarm begins to cycle on-and- off, signaling that fire ground mode has been selected.
Name 5 factors which should be taken into consideration when leveling the aerial.
- The area around the apparatus must be clear for outrigger extension.
- When performing aerial operations, the outrigger stabilizer pads shall be used.
- Safety pins shall be used when the outriggers are set in position.
- Front axle brake lock valve shall be set.
- Use wheel chocks when possible
What is the preferred setup for leveling the aerial?
The preferred set-up is an uphill position, with the rear outriggers supporting enough weight to remove the bulge from the rear tires. The front outriggers should be firmly planted on the ground, but leaving the front suspension compressed allowing full aerial operation.
When the level is beyond a certain degree, what will the happen?
Anytime the apparatus is beyond 8 degrees from level, a warning will be displayed on the CZIC display and all control functions will be disabled.
All moving parts for doors, latches and hinges should be lubricated using what?
A silicon lubricant should be used on all moving parts.
What are the two ways ATC, or automatic traction control, works?
- If a drive wheel starts to spin, ATC applies air pressure to brake the wheel, thus transferring engine power to the other wheel with better traction.
- If all drive wheels spin, ATC will reduce engine torque to provide better traction.
What does the ATC control light do when ATC has been activated?
The ATC indicator lamp will blink continuously when ATC has been activated. Toggling the switch will turn ATC off, as well as turning off the engine.
When tilting the cab, how much gap should be left between the safety stay arm and the cylinder?
1/4” gap should be left.
What is a possible consequence of tilting the cab on a non-level surface or incline?
Tilting the cab on an incline or non-flat surface may produce interference between components as the cab is lowered.
