Attempt to tackle rural issues in the Northern Fells (part of the Lake District National Park in the county of Cumbria).
- Set up in 1999 and is still operating today.
- Expanded services, such as providing advice on energy costs, to meet evolving community needs.
Method of the Community Health Project
Utilized trusted healthcare professionals to identify needs through direct contact with the population.
New services were added onto existing Health Centres, promoting them in these venues.
Led by a paid project coordinator with 3 assistants and a larger team of volunteers. = kept staffing costs low
How did the community project address transport issues?
Traditional bus services were too expensive and insufficient for the demand.
A volunteer-led minibus service was set up, making 100 journeys a month, supported by 22 drivers.
Project Successes
‘Lend a Hand’ Scheme: Volunteers helped people who were ill, disabled, or in need of care.
Youth Development Workshops: Provided teenagers with skills linked to future career opportunities.
Benefits Advice Scheme: Signposted economically disadvantaged individuals to state benefits, offering guidance.
Challenges Not Tackled
Housing Access: Difficulty accessing affordable homes due to high property prices and planning policies.
Remoteness and Economic Opportunity: Issues of remoteness and lack of economic opportunities were not directly tackled.
Demographic Changes: The project did not fully address the changing demographics and associated challenges.
