what is self leadership
the practice of intentionally influencing your thinking, feeling and behaviours to achieve your objectives.
what are the different leadership styles
autocratic, democratic, laissez faire, transformational
what is autocratic leadership
strict and militant. trask orientated and command group to follow orders. for example, Hitler. characteristics include
- directive (reduces individual creativity)
- does not involve members in decision making (minimises performance)
- maintains leadership at all times (low job satisfaction)
- demanding/impatient (conflict in the workplace)
what is democratic leadership
works with fellow group members to reach goals. group members have a voice and input into decision making. for example, steve jobs. characteristics include:
- willing to share leadership role (builds trust and mutual respect)
- involves group members (teamwork)
- consults group members (less conflict)
- considered all people equally (members feel valued)
what is laissez faire
relaxed and laid back. limited control. group members must be highly motivated to complete task or reach goal. characteristics include:
- avoids making decisions (members not motivated)
- allows members to decide (groups more likely to break)
- not task oriented (low productivity)
- fails to recognise worth of members (lack of group cohesion)
what is transformational leadership
compassionate and motivated. inspires growth. members will look up to leader and want to keep happy. for example, sporting coaches. characteristics include:
- inspirational (encourages higher levels of achievement)
- communicates vision (increased productivity)
- encourages rethinking (effective and satisfying to work)
- praises members for effort (high self esteem and self worth)
