what is a ‘role’ in a group

A

the part played by somebody in a given social context. it is the set of responsibilities that are based on their involvement in the group. the role take on will depend on skills, title, position, and involvement in the group.

A

an individual who guides or directs others by showing them the way.

A

they ensure tasks are achieved. members are concerned with completing the task within a specific time. they are task oriented. for example, expert, brainstormer, judge, chairperson

A

they maintain/build relationships. members are concerned with the wellbeing of the group. they work at catering to their needs. for example; peace-maker, encourager, advocate, mediator.

what is a destructive role and what do they do

A

they influence the groups progress. this may be positive or negative. members work at diverting attention from the task so that goals are either not achieved or at a lower level. their aim is to be destructive. for example, victim, distracter, delayer, interrupter, clown. (these are hindering roles)

what are norms

A

a powerful and consistent influence on behaviour. norms are the groups standards in relation to behaviour and functioning. guidelines which may be formal or informal. failure to comply may result in rejection.

A

the way that group members follow the norms. conforming signals dedication to the group. abiding improves personal wellbeing.
