Leaf structure Flashcards
(16 cards)
Palisade cells
Contains lots of chloroplasts so they can absorb lots of lights
Air space
So the gases have enough space to reach the cells
Guard cells
They can change shape to open and close the hole
Stoma
When it opens it lets in CO2 and O2 gas comes out
Where are Palisade cells found
Top side of the leaf
Where are guard cells found
In pairs underside of a leaf
Where are root hair cells found
Roots or underground
How many chloroplasts are found in a palisade cell
A lot as most of photosynthesis happens here
How many chloroplasts are found in a guard cell
A few but less light reaches here so no need for chloroplasts
How many chloroplasts are found in a root hair cell
None as there is no light so no photosynthesis
Does a palisade cell have a large surface area
No
Does a guard cell have a large surface area
No
Does a root hair cell have a large surface area
Yes it has a bit that protrudes
What is the function of a palisade cell
Absorbs the light and carry out most photosynthesis
What is the function of a guard cell
Open and close the stoma, controlling the diffusion of gases
What is the function of a root hair cell
It absorbs water, magnesium and nitrates
